Youth and Young Adult Mental Health

The physical and emotional changes of youth and young adulthood can make young people particularly vulnerable to mental health issues. They can face a number of difficulties including anxiety, attachment disorders, depression, eating disorders and self-harm or suicide risk.

It’s vital that young people and their families can access specialised support and treatment as soon as they require it, in order to avoid poorer outcomes and over-medicalisation as the young person grows.

Treatment for youth and young adult mental health issues may include psychiatric and psychological interventions.

Young people may present with a range of mental health problems including depression, anxiety, psychosis, school refusal, obsessive compulsive disorder and social and behavioural problems.

As these problems may be expressed in many ways, our programs often involve the whole family, not just the patient, because a young person’s problems cannot be effectively treated in isolation.
