An eating disorder is a mental health condition in which eating, exercise, body weight and shape become an unhealthy preoccupation in a person’s life. Eating disorders are complex and can take many forms. People of all shapes and sizes can be affected by an eating disorder.
Treatment for an eating disorder usually involves a mix of psychiatric interventions, psychological care, nutritional counselling and self-help strategies.

Who is it for
The Inpatient Eating Disorder Program is suitable for patients who have not responded well to outpatient therapy and are experiencing dangerous malnourishment or bingeing/purging behaviour. It helps participants to develop regular eating patterns by focusing on recovery and developing the knowledge and skills to overcome unhelpful eating behaviours and mindsets.

We offer regular individual dietetic appointments for each patient to monitor food choices and set eating plans.
Group therapy helps patients learn how to manage unhelpful thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Goal setting, emotion regulation and problem solving skills are also important components of the treatment package.
All patients are provided care and support specific to their individual needs.

An open program which runs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for an agreed four week period. Further treatment is dependent on progress.
The Eating Disorder Program focuses on recovery and helps participants develop the knowledge and skills to overcome unhelpful eating behaviours and mindsets. It is suitable for patients 16 years of age and older with less severe eating disorders, or for patients wanting to build on gains made in a recent inpatient stay for an eating disorder. It is designed for individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 16.0 who haven’t been able to benefit from community based treatment.

Binge Eating Disorder is a psychological difficulty characterised by regular episodes of eating an objectively large amount of food in a discrete time period. Binge episodes are often accompanied by feelings of loss of control, eating alone or in secret, eating very rapidly, and in many cases feelings of guilt and shame.

Individuals with this disorder are not necessarily overweight or obese, or underweight.
The Binge Eating Disorder program at Ramsay Clinic Hollywood focuses on recovery for participants and assists them to develop the knowledge and skills to overcome unhelpful eating behaviours and mindsets. The program improves eating competency through individualised meal plans and supported eating. It also educates participants on emotional triggers and improves their understanding of the causal and maintaining factors that perpetuate unhelpful behaviours.
The program is coordinated by a multi-disciplinary team including a psychologist and psychiatrist, to provide comprehensive patient support. A specialist dietitian also facilitates the nutritional component of the program.
The psychological treatment approach is grounded in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which helps to change unhelpful or unhealthy habits of thinking, feeling and behaving. This is accompanied by key components of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy.
