Professor James Scott is a Child and Youth Psychiatrist and the Director of Ramsay Health Youth Service at New Farm. He has experience working in inpatient and community settings. He has  an interest in providing care to children and young people with anxiety, ADHD, psychosis and mood disorders. His clinical practice incorporates a biopsychosocial model with intensive family involvement.

James is also a clinician researcher. He was the recipient of a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Practitioner Fellowship (2016-2020), awarded for his research into prevention and intervention strategies to improve the mental health of adolescents. He is an author on over 300 peer reviewed publications. In 2018, he was awarded the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists’ Senior Research Award, conferred on the ‘Fellow who has made the most significant contribution to psychiatric research in Australia and New Zealand over the preceding five years.

Ramsay Health Youth Service at New Farm was developed by James and commenced in November 2022 with the opening of the first private inpatient unit for adolescents 14-17 years. It has now expanded to have a second ward for youth (18-25 years).

The service will provide a group based programme which will provide young people with skills to better cope with their mental health problems. The service will be for young people with mental health problems who have significant impairment in functioning. It is open to adolescents and young adults seeking voluntary admissions who are willing to participate in the programme of group and individual therapy, physical activity and family support. Young people will be admitted for a maximum of three weeks. The programme will be ideal for those who are seeking more intensive treatment than can be provided in outpatient appoinntments. Because it is an open ward without capacity for involuntary admissions, Ramsay Health Youth Service at New Farm is unable to provide care to young people who are at high risk of harm to themselves or others.
